





A straw crusher is a piece of machinery specifically designed to process agricu, and pulverizes the straw—transforming bulky, long-fiber material that is otherwise difficult to handle into uniform small particles or shredded strands—thereby providing suitable raw materials for subsequent processes such as animal feed production, organic fertilizer manufacturing, and biomass energy utilization.
The operating process of a straw crusher is straightforward, consisting of four key steps:
Feeding. Straw enters the shredder evenly via a feeding mechanism; common methods include screw conveyors and feed rollers.
Shredding. This is the core stage. High-speed rotating blades, hammers, or grinding discs come into contact with the straw, breaking it down through cutting, tearing, and friction.
Screening. The shredded material passes through a screen; particles that meet specifications are discharged, while oversized pieces are returned to the shredding unit for further processing. The screen aperture diameter—ranging from 0.5mm to 20mm——directly determines the final particle size. For every 1mm reduction in aperture size, production capacity drops by approximately 15%-20%.
Discharge. Material meeting specifications is discharged from the outlet; some designs also feature pneumatic conveying systems to transport the material directly to a designated location.
Shredded, softened straw is used to produce silage and hay for cattle and sheep, as well as bedding for livestock facilities. Many large-scale farms use trough-type compost turners to mix straw with livestock manure for fermentation, creating low-cost organic fertilizer.
Straw is an excellent source of carbon; when mixed and fermented with livestock waste—such as cattle or chicken manure—it helps balance the carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of the materials. Many clients purchasing complete fertilizer production lines incorporate straw shredders as front-end pretreatment equipment to prepare suitable powdered material for the subsequent granulation process.
Shredded straw can be processed into biomass fuel briquettes, while finely ground straw powder serves as a cultivation substrate for oyster mushrooms and enoki mushrooms. Additionally, orchard prunings, weeds, vines, and fallen leaves can be fed into the machine for shredding, allowing for on-site composting and soil enrichment.
